The Chosen by Chaim Potok (I really liked My Mane is Asher Lev too).

I'm also a big Charles Dickens fan. He can be wordy but seeing that you're re-reading Lord of the Rings I don't think you'll mind. A Tale of Two Cities is a classic if you haven't read it already but my all time favorite is David Copperfield.

I just read Killing Pablo by Mark Bowden too and was surprised by how much I liked it.

I'm so jealous of your August plans! I hope you guys have so much fun heading off to NY too.

the end of the affair - graham greene (this book almost did me in it was so good)
gravity's rainbow - thomas pynchon (hard to get into but incredibly good once you get into it)
a wizard of earthsea - ursula k leguin (if gandalf and harry potter had a child it would be this book's main character)
any of susan sontag's non-fiction books (i've not read any of her fiction books so i can't vouch for it)
cats cradle - kurt vonnegut
slaughterhouse five - kurt vonnegut (i will recommend anything he has written. i have loved all 23 of his books)
beneath the wheel - hermann hesse
steppenwolf - hermann hesse (i've also really enjoyed all of hesse's books)
the name of the rose - umberto eco
foucault's pendulum - umberto eco (i've also like all of eco's books)

and on and on

now i know why maxi dresses made me feel so unsettled.
how about- into the wild by Jon krakauer i actually really enjoyed that and i'm not a biography type person, or leni by stephen bach which is all about leni riefenstahl and alongside information about nazi germany and it's propaganda etc i'm liking that. or fiction wise - have you read any chip kidd? i thought the cheese monkeys was brilliant.
note how i didn't recommend any mincing english dandy's.

I just realized that three of the four last authors I recommended are drunk louses, and pretty much are in line with the "dysfunctional junkies" you don't want to read about. So never mind those guys. But Steinbeck is amazing.

The Agony and the Ecstasy: A Biographical Novel of Michelangelo, by Irving Stone.

The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde.

.. and a fun light read: The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time, by Mark Haddon.

Anything by John Steinbeck, Jack Kerouac, J.D. Salinger or Ernest Hemingway, you can be sure to enjoy.
